FISIP UNDIP Community Service Team Assists Social Media Utilization for Sustainable Tourism Development in Liyangan Tourism Village

Temanggung, May 10, 2026 – The Community Service Team from the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Diponegoro University, conducted a community service activity in Liyangan Tourism Village, Purbosari Village, Ngadirejo District, Temanggung Regency, on Saturday, May 10, 2026. This activity carried the theme “Assistance in the Use of Social Media for the Development of Sustainable Tourism Products and Services in Liyangan Tourism Village” as an effort to strengthen the community’s digital capacity in supporting destination promotion and local economic improvement.

This community service activity is motivated by the great potential of Liyangan Tourism Village as a tourism village based on cultural and natural heritage. The existence of the Liyangan Site as a cultural heritage, the panoramic views of Mount Sindoro’s slopes, and local cultural traditions are important assets for community-based tourism development. However, the promotion of tourism products and services has not been optimal due to the limited use of social media, both in terms of posting consistency, content quality, and the integration of tourist information, MSME products, and tourism village services into the digital space. This condition has resulted in low destination visibility and suboptimal local economic circulation.

Through this activity, the Diponegoro University community service team provided assistance to the main partners, namely the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), tourism MSME actors, and the village government/management of Liyangan Tourism Village. The assistance focused on strengthening social media management capacity, creating promotional digital content, developing culture-based and sustainability-focused storytelling, and structuring more directed and sustainable digital promotion governance. Additionally, this activity was also aimed at integrating destination promotion with local MSME products so that the economic benefits of tourism could be felt more widely by the community.

The implementing team of this activity consisted of Prof. Dr. Dra. Kismartini, M.Si as chairperson, with members Dr. A.P. Dra. Tri Yuniningsih, M.Si., Retna Hanani, S.Sos., MPP, Dr. Asih Widi Lestari, S.A.P., M.A.P., and Rosalina Woro Subektie, S.I.P., MPA. This activity is part of the Independent Community Service Program for the First Semester of 2026, funded from independent sources.

The implementation approach of the activity was designed to be participatory and collaborative, actively involving the community, lecturers, and students. Through training and practical assistance, partners were encouraged to utilize social media more strategically, not only as a promotional tool but also as a means to build the tourism village’s image, convey sustainability values, and introduce the local identity of Liyangan Village to a wider audience. This program was also directed to support sustainable tourism development in line with local economic empowerment efforts and the achievement of the SDGs.

Through this community service activity, FISIP, Diponegoro University, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the strengthening of fostered villages and community empowerment based on local potential. The assistance in social media utilization in Liyangan Tourism Village is expected to be a concrete step in increasing tourist attractiveness, expanding promotional reach, strengthening the community’s digital capacity, and ultimately driving a sustainable increase in visitor numbers and community income.
